It’s August. More than half of 2014 is already behind us. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly time passes by. On 31 December 2013, I wrote about some goals I hoped to achieve during 2014. Well, most of them weren’t really goals, they were more like things I wanted to do more of during 2014. But, a couple of them were goals. Let’s look back and see where I’m at.
Although I haven’t exercised as much as I should, I can say that I’ve already exercised more in 2014 than I did in 2013. Besides bowling, I started boxing training. In late 2013, the CEO/President of the company where I work offered gym membership and equipment (gloves and wraps) to anyone who wanted to join his boxing workout group. I joined the group in March. My goal was to go 2-3 times a week, but I averaged 1-2 times a week through March. Then I stopped going. I enjoyed the workouts. They are tough, but fun. But the best days for me to go are the days when the the workouts start at 6:00 AM. For those of you who know me, I’m am not a morning person. I have a difficult time getting to bed regularly before midnight, and I don’t like to get up early. I did try going back in late May, but about that time I started getting occasional pain in my right elbow: tendinitis. Fortunately, it’s not constant, but it does get rather painful. So, I’m taking time off in hopes that it heals. When it does, I’m planning to go back.
So, I’ll give myself an incomplete on this one for now. I’ve put on a little weight over the past few months. My endocrinologist wants me to lose some weight. I’ve gotten out of a few of my good eating habits, so, I’ve joined Weight Watchers Online. I’m going to start doing some body weight exercises at home and maybe head back over to the gym in the evenings 3 or 4 times a week.
New Goal: Lose 30+ pounds by November 2014.
Progress: I’ve been using Weight Watchers Online for 3 weeks (since I saw my endocrinologist, but before I started writing this post) and I’ve lost 8.2 pounds!
So far, I’m not doing so hot with this one. I’ve picked them up a few times, but not nearly as much as I’d hoped to have done so far. I recently rearranged my office/man cave to (hopefully) facilitate making it easier to grab a guitar off the wall and play. It’s not a goal, just something I wanted to do more of. I still have half the year to work on this.
I’d say I’ve been pretty successful with this so far. I’ve written 14 blog posts since the beginning of the year (this one makes 15), about 2 per month. I’m not consistent about writing x number of posts per month or week, but that wasn’t the point. I just wanted to write for my website. So far so good.
I’d never averaged 200+ for an entire bowling season. Ever. For the most part, I’d been averaging in the 190s for the past 2 years. I was bowling 3 leagues last winter season (September – May). I finished 2 leagues with averages over 200 (201 and 202) and 1 league with a 196. I figured out the composite average for all 3 leagues was slightly above 200 (200.22). YAY! I finally did it!
I also wanted to bowl better at the USBC Open Championship in 2014 than I did in 2013. That didn’t happen. I didn’t participate as planned. However, I did do better at the 2014 Southern Nevada Open and the 2014 Nevada State Open than last year. I didn’t cash in the Southern Nevada Open, but I did in the Nevada State Open.

I want to explore and see more of Southern Nevada and Las Vegas. Well, Stephanie and I visited Springs Preserve earlier this year and do plan to go back once the weather cools back down. I also walked across the “new” Colorado River bridge that’s just south of US 95. There are still more things I want to go see like the Neon Museum, Fremont St and Downtown (it’s been a while since I’ve been there and it’s changed quite a bit in the past year or two), The Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon, Mt. Charleston and Wetlands Park. Another incomplete , but it’s just too freaking hot to be traipsing around outdoors in summer. Then again, Mt. Charleston is nice this time of year.
Taking more photos of the places I visit and see was something I wanted to start doing this year. Another incomplete. I do have a bunch of photos of Hoover Dam and the “new” Colorado River bridge that I need to look through and post online, but other than the few photos I took at Springs Preserve and some sunsets, I’ve not been keeping up with the photography. By getting out and seeing more of my own “backyard” some of this photography “goal” will be met without any extra effort. But I do want to have a camera around to use anytime I see something interesting. I can use my iPhone camera for this but there are times I want something better to use like my Olympus digital camera.
The Mid Year Verdict
Overall, I’d say I’m doing pretty good with my 2014 “goals.” I’ve only really slacked on three of them: playing my guitars, exploring Southern Nevada and photography. Fortunately, by take a look back at these “goals” in August(as opposed to December), I still have time to make good on them. I created one new goal for the second half of 2014 too. In December I’ll look back again and see how I did.
